It was a one-time event that grew out of a confluence of neglect.  More than half that number are killed every year in New York State where traffic accidents cost 19.45 billion dollars.  Transportation is an ongoing confluence of neglect killing more people nationwide every month; more globally, every single day and causing rapid environmental degradation and ultimately, projected potential worldwide upheaval on a cataclysmic scale.      Eric Ng   According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, bicycles are second only to cars as a preferred form of transportation. (Hundreds of millions of people globally use bicycles for serious transportation.) Excluding this highly preferred mode of transportation does not make sense and is counterintuitive.    Since humans are quite adept at moving themselves there is terrific benefit in developing methods to optimize human self-propulsion just like there is terrific benefit in optimizing use of the sun.   Towards Zero Deaths Initiatives will be one responsible way to make things a lot better.    Hybrid human-electric agile monorails can be the new express routes.
